Scientists May Have Found Another Way to Circumvent Infertility

You may have heard of the three-person baby whereby a child is created from the egg of its mother, but the mitochondria (powerhouse of the cell) is replaced with a donor’s and then the father’s sperm is introduced to complete conception. Now doctors want to apply a similar concept to help improve IVF success rates. In this new scenario, a woman’s own mitochondria is extracted from a healthy cell and inserted into one of her not-so-healthy eggs. Medical proponents say this will greatly improve the success of IVF procedures but so far the FDA is not convinced. What are your thoughts?
