Egg Freezing | Fertility Preservation
Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) is an excellent option for women hoping to delay fertility for a number of reasons. Egg freezing has gained significant popularity over the past few years as our techniques to freeze eggs have significantly improved. Initially, egg freezing was recommended for women with cancer who needed to freeze eggs before undergoing chemotherapy treatments that were harmful to their eggs. This technique is now available to all women and is now most commonly performed for women who are not ready to conceive yet, but would like to preserve the option to conceive with their own eggs in the future.
A woman’s success of pregnancy declines as she ages, and this is specifically due to egg quality. The idea of freezing eggs is to preserve pregnancy rates with young eggs which would be used later in life when pregnancy rates may not be ideal.
An egg freezing cycle generally takes about 1 month and is very similar to in vitro fertilization. The entire egg freezing cycle is performed through our office in Mount Pleasant and eggs can stay frozen for an indefinite amount of time. Pregnancy rates with frozen eggs are equal to pregnancy rates using fresh eggs.
Our embryology team at Coastal Fertility has received multiple awards for their egg freezing techniques and our pregnancy rates from egg freezing are well above the national average. Our center is proud to be responsible for the first, second, and third babies born in South Carolina from oocyte cryopreservation.
Egg freezing truly serves as an outstanding option for women who are concerned about their fertility and would like to preserve options for themselves in the future. For more information, please schedule an appointment and our team would be happy to discuss the process with you in more detail.
