Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Treatment

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Procedure

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a common fertility treatment that is used by many women who are having trouble getting pregnant on their own. During IUI, prepared sperm is inserted into a woman’s uterus, thereby enhancing fertilization. IUI is often performed in conjunction with ovulation induction medications.

Is IUI Right for You?

Patients who may benefit from intrauterine insemination include those with any of the following fertility problems:

Getting Started with IUI

Before you start the IUI process, you will need to make an appointment to see one of the fertility doctors here at Coastal Fertility Specialists. You and your partner will need to be appropriately evaluated. We will need to conduct thorough testing to ensure that you are a good candidate for the process, that your fallopian tubes are open and that your uterine cavity is normal. We will also need to evaluate sperm parameters to ensure that sperm quality will be adequate for inseminations.

How does IUI Work?

Intrauterine insemination may be performed using sperm from your male partner or from a sperm donor. If you are interested in donor sperm, we will walk you through that process step by step. Here are the main steps to getting pregnant with IUI:

  1. Ovulation induction medications will be started, if recommended.
  2. Ovulation induction monitoring may be performed via transvaginal ultrasounds and also occasionally through evaluation of hormones.
  3. At the appropriate time, medication is given in order to release an egg(s).
  4. Insemination is performed at a specific time after release of the egg(s).
  5. A pregnancy test is then performed approximately two weeks after the insemination.
