The First Nexton Baby: A Journey to Parenthood

The first baby born after treatment at Coastal Fertility’s new Nexton office was Shelton Leander Murphy who arrived just in time for the holidays on November 19, 2021 to Justice and Jordan Murphy. Here’s a peek inside their Journey to Parenthood. Every fertility journey is unique and special.

What made Coastal Fertility Specialists the right partner for your family?
We were very hesitant to seek assistance initially, because we knew it could be an extremely stressful journey emotionally and financially. We decided after 4 years of trying to conceive on our own that it was time to take the next step. I began opening up about my fertility issues at work, and soon heard about coastal fertility and saw what they done to help some of my coworkers start their families. My husband and I decided it was time to take that next step. We had our initial appointment where we met Dr. McLaughlin. She sat down with us and explained everything between anatomy, and what all of our options would be. She was very thorough, answered all of our questions, and made us feel comfortable. It was at that very appointment that we decided to move forward with our IUI journey. That SAME day we sat down with the financial counselor who explained everything about appointment and procedure costs. We also met our nurse navigator who explained her role to us, and how she would help assist us with when and how to take medications, when to schedule appointments, go over lab results, and answer questions along the way. I had initial labs drawn at our very first consultation appointment, and we began our journey with them immediately. That’s how comfortable we felt with them. They were so thorough, and took so much stress off of our shoulders in just one appointment. That’s how we knew they were right for us.

How did the Nexton location of Coastal Fertility Specialists benefit your family?
We live in Moncks corner, and when beginning fertility treatment there are multiple appointments a week. We were able to schedule some appointments in North Charleston at the time, but all procedures had to be complete at the Mt. pleasant office originally. The Nexton office opened a short time later, and we were then able to do everything there; all of our appointments; labs, ultrasounds, AND our IUI procedure. It allowed my husband to be present at more appointments, and gave us our beautiful boy. We went into the Nexton office for our IUI procedure on March 4, 2021. That was the day that changed our lives forever after 4 long years of trying on our own. They gave us our precious boy.

Families spend a lot of time with the professionals that care for them during their fertility journey. How did you find the staff and doctors at Nexton’s Coastal Fertility Specialists?
All of the staff was amazing, from our first appointment to our last. There is a lot of time spent with the staff during this journey, due to multiple appointments weekly to make sure medications are working appropriately, and to make sure you are safe. I was going about every two days at the beginning so they could monitor my ovaries and follicles growing. So, you are seeing their staff frequently. It didn’t matter what time of day it was, everyone was always friendly and supportive. You never felt like a stranger walking in. Not to mention, you are paired with your nurse navigator and doctor at the beginning and that was a big deal for me. It was a good feeling to have that kind of consistency on this exciting and scary journey.

How did it feel to bring Shelton home for the first time?
Reading this question brought me to tears. It was and still is such a magical feeling. A day we waited so long for finally happened. All of these feelings rush through you and suddenly 4 years didn’t seem so long anymore. We felt extremely blessed and thankful.

What would you tell other Moncks Corner/Summerville area couples that are starting their fertility journey?
I would tell them to make that first appointment with Coastal Fertility in Nexton. Go see Dr. McLaughlin and her team. After having such a positive experience and having our baby boy, I wish we would’ve gone sooner. You are not alone in your journey, and they will be there with you every step of the way. I know firsthand how defeated you can feel month after month, and it’s ok to need that extra help. Let them help you start your family. You won’t regret letting this team into your life.
